More GM lab rats

For the first time, genetically modified test subjects outnumber “normal” animals, according to a report from the Home Office, a department of the UK government. Of the more than 3.6 million scientific procedures involving animals in the UK last year, just 48 percent involved genetically unmanipulated animals. The rise in GM animal studies may stem from the ability to build better disease models, according to BBC News.

Cloning fatter meat

Some European livestock breeders are using cloning as a strategy to develop more consistently “plump and productive animals,” according to The New York Times – meat from which may already be in the market.

Prehistoric shrimp

Two new colonies of ancient tadpole shrimp have been discovered in Southwest Scotland, BBC News reported. Once thought to have gone extinct in the region, the 220 million-year-old shrimp has now been spotted periodically for the last 6 years.
